Covenanter Tank

The Mk V Covenanter (A13 Mk III) was the first British cruiser tank design to be given a name. It was named after the Covenanters, a Scottish religious group in the British Isles during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. During the late 1930s, Henry Meadows designed the engine while the turret was designed by Nuffield. A total of 1,771 units were built by three manufacturers ( London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS), English Electric and Leyland Motors).

The Covenanter weighed 19 tonnes and measured 5.97 metres long, 2.77 metres wide and 2.24 metres high. The crew consisted of a commander, gunner, loader and driver. Its armour was 7 to 40 millimetres thick. The arms included a QF 2-pounder (40 millimetres) and a 7.92 co-axial Besa machine gun. It was powered by a Meadows Falt-12 D.A.V. engine with 340 horsepower. The transmission was a Wilson compound epicycle gearbox. Its operational range was 100 miles and it could reach a speed of 30 miles per hour. If your a car fanatic, get a custom usb of your favourite design.

The Covenanter had several variants; the original production model was the Covenanter Mk I (Cruiser Mk V). The Covenanter Mk II (Cruiser Mk V*) had an added radiator-mounted oil cooler. The Mk II’s observation post version had a dummy gun, two No. 19 radios and a No. 18 radio whereas its command version had no No.18 radio. The Covenanter Mk III (Cruiser Mk V**) had twin oil coolers installed on either side of the engine, a modified clutch linkage and air cleaners were added inboard at the rear. Its exhaust silencers were moved to the ends of the track guards. The Covenanter Mk IV was same as the Mk II but with the clutch changes of the Mk III. All closed support versions of the Covenanter had a 3-inch Howitzer. The Covenanter Bridgelayer had its hull built-in with a bridge 34 feet long and 9 feet 6 inches wide. It was able to cover a gap 30 feet wide and carry 24 tonnes. The Covenanter ARV Mk I was an armoured recovery vehicle based on a turretless Covenanter hull. There was also an Anti-Mine Roller Attachment (AMRA) Mk IC that was a mine clearing device that consisted of four heavy rollers suspended from a frame.
